“Ballad of sally anne” Grammy Nomination
Alice Randall’s song “Ballad of Sally Anne” performed by Rhiannon Giddens nominated for Best American Roots Performance at the 2025 Grammy’s. Gidden’s version is found on the “My Black Country: The Songs of Alice Randall” album released on Oh Boy Records.
“The Ballad of Sally Anne is a song about a Black woman making the urgent case for empathy and reckoning in a dangerous world that sees her husband lynched between his wedding and his reception. Sally Ann insists on being seen even in the face of injustice, even in the face of unspeakable hurt. This nomination means the Academy, at least, is a witness. The Academy can acknowledge her truth. And that is no small thing. I thank everyone who voted for this song co-written by a Black woman, sung by another Black woman, produced by a third Black woman who put the horns on the fiddle tune to remind us that lynching happened in America into the middle of the 20th century. Emmit Till was lynched after he was dragged. #IamSallyAnne”
